5 Ridiculous Comic Book Controversies |
| by Kurt Amacker www.mania.com |
Greetings, Maniacs, and welcome
to another week of The No-Fly Zone, Mania.coms
alternative comics column, where no superhero goes un-ignored
(except for Watchmen and the other revisionist
takes we all know about). Now, everyone in the comic book world
loves a good controversy. Nothing gets fans fired up like censorship
controversies, fights between publishers, and creators who
walk away from movie deals in the name of integrity. Since
the mediums inception, drama has surrounded it. From its seedy
origins alongside porn magazines to the Congressional inquiries
that led to the Comics Code Authority in the 1950s, comics
were born under a bad sign. Only in the past few years has
the medium clawed its way to respectability. But, over the
past few years, the specter of censorship and controversy over
taste has still loomed. Here are five recent instances when
comics came under fire and it was nice to see the scariest
man in America, Hart D. Fisher, right in the middle of two
of them.

REVIEW: The House of the Devil
2 out of 5 stars
A cash-strapped college student named Samantha (Jocelin Donahue)
takes a babysitting job during a full lunar eclipse and ends up
fighting for her life. She soon discovers that her employers,
Tom (Tom Noonan) and Mary (Mary Woronov) Ulman, are hiding a
wicked, sick and t...wisted secret. Ti West (Cabin Fever 2: Spring
Fever) writes, directs and edits this terrifying film set in
the early 1980s. Greta Gerwig and AJ Bowen co-star.
Toooooooooooooooooooo be fair, Old Guy, I was brought up during
the early 90's and went to the video store like people went to
church. Now, I know classic cheese and bad horror movies are just
that, bad, but I do hold a semblance of understanding when it comes
to my trash!
Also I'm by no means lumping in HOTD
with the filmworks of Kubrick and ... See MorePolanski, I'm just
saying West was obviously influenced more by them then the current
freddy/jason/leatherface worship that is running down the "shot on video" types of now
and that it was a different stylistic approach than the usual over-exposed,
poorly acted, montage of "torture" movies or whathaveyou
and that I deeply appreciate that.
But what do I know, I love both versions of The Wicker Man.

REVIEW: Zombieland
3 out of 5 stars
An easily spooked guy, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), joins forces
with wild man Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) to fight for survival
in a world virtually taken over by freakish zombies. As they
destroy scores of the undead, they meet up with two other survivors,
Little Roc...k (Abigail Breslin) and Wichita (Emma Stone), and
journey to a supposedly safe abandoned amusement park. Ruben
Fleischer directs this horror romp.
Harrelson steals the show in this
fun, but predictable comedy. There's some good moments here
(the cameo especially), but a lot of the time, the film loses
momentum & bogs down. SHAUN
OF THE DEAD was better and more true to the genre
